Tuesday night’s US Presidential debate will go down in history as perhaps the least Presidential with President Donald Trump refusing to not only denounce the far right, but also constantly interrupting his opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden.
The good folk at CBS News were keeping tally, and according to them Trump interrupted Biden a whopping 73 times! At one point, Biden got so frustrated by the constant interruption that he ended up snapping, “Will you shut up, man?”
This one line quickly turned into Twitter gold:
This was but only one of the shockingly un-presidential things said at a stage where two men who hope to govern the United States over the next four years were expected to debate policy and plans.
The next big shocker came from Trump himself when he asked “Proud Boys” to “stand back and stand by.” Proud Boys is a white supremacist group that describes itself as a “Men’s organization for western chauvinists”. Trumps words appeared to suggest that he wanted the group to get ready to act, a dangerous position for any political leader hoping to be at the helm of a nation that is still struggling with racism. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer called the debate “the most chaotic Presidential debate” he had ever seen, while Jake Tapper memorable dubbed it “A hot mess inside a dumpster-fire inside a train wreck!”
